Michiel de Ruyter

Michiel Adriaenszoon de Ruyter was born in 1607 in Vlissingen.In 1618 Michiel goes for the First time to the sea, in service of the shipping company of Lapsins.In 1621-1622 he served in the State army of prince Maurits.He was going to the sea again in 1622 were he climbed in rank very fast, he took care of that he gain some sea knowledge.Because of that, he could become a quarter master.He married in 1631 his first wife, Mayke Velders, she died in the childbed.He married again 1636 with Neeltje Engels, she died in 1650.Their son was Engel de Ruyter (1649-1683).Between 1633 and 1635 was De Ruyter quarter master on the whaler 'the Green Lion'. In 1637 he became captain on a particular Cruiser (a pirate ship) of the brothers Lampisins in Vlissingen. In 1641-1642 he was for a short period a scout by night under command of admiral Gijsels, and he also was captain of the ship 'De Haze' it was a warship, who was rebuild to a trading ship. Then De Ruyter bought a ship of his own, called the 'Salamander'. He travelled 8 years with it on his own account. Most of the time in North-Africa and West-Indies.

De Ruyter was on that moment on the highest hour of his foam. His son Engel was Appointed to Scout-by-night. In 1674 there was a bad packing out expedition to Martinique. In 1675 the Spanish queen asked for help against the French who occupied Spanish property in South-Italy (Sicily and Napels). But he said: 'De Lords don't have to request me, but they have to command me and even if men send me with 1 ship, I would risk my live.' and he undertake and finally the expedition with the ship the Eendracht. In the battle by the Etna on 22 April 1676 De Ruyter gets badly hurt by a cannon bullet that shattered his right leg. There arises a traumatic fever, were he died at in 29 April 1676. His body was being taken on board of the Eendracht who arrived very late: 30 January 1677 in Hellevoetsluis. He was a successful student in high school and completed his VWO (the highest level in the Dutch secondary school system, granting access to university). It was during his time in high school that he began following a radical form of Islam.In January 2003 Azzouz was arrested in Ukraine. He and a friend were allegedly on their way to Chechnya to fight for the jihad. However, the pair of 17-year olds lacked proper passports and clothing and had to return to the Netherlands.In October 2003 Azzouz and four others were arrested in the Netherlands. They were suspected of constituting a terrorist cell, but were released for lack of evidence.On 30 June 2004 Azzouz was arrested again for the armed robbery of a supermarket. During a search of Azzouz's house, police found what they believed to be evidence that Azzouz had been involved in planning several attacks on Dutch targets, such as Schiphol Airport and the nuclear power plant in Borselle. Police found maps of these targets, some chemicals used in explosives, such as fertilizer, and ammunition.However, at trial the judge concluded there was insufficient evidence to convict Azzouz on the charge of planning terrorist attacks. Peter Stuyvesant

Peter Stuyvesant was born in Holland in 1602, he was the governor of New York (in that time called New Amsterdam). He was the son of a clergyman of Friesland, he served in the West Indies, he was a governor of a colony of Curacao, he lost a leg during the unsuccessful attack on the Portuguese island St. Martin because of that he returned to Holland. He became there Director- General of the New-Netherlands, he had to go once more to America.
In 1647, his conflict with the citizens began. They were alienated by his despotic methods and his devotion to the interest of the company. In response to their demands for self-government, he and the council in 1647 appointed an advisory board of nine, and in 1653 there was established the first municipal government for the city of New Amsterdam, modelled after the cities of Holland. These concessions proved hollow, for Stuyvesant never ceased to dominate the government. In 1650 he sacrificed a large amount of territory in a settlement of the boundary between New-Netherlands and Connecticut. But he succeeded in dislodging the Swedes from their settlement in Dutch territory along the Delaware River and in establishing peace with the Indians there. In August 1664, when the citizens refused to aid him, Stuyvesant was forced to surrender New Netherlands to the British. According to some historians, the West India Company made him the scapegoat for what actually were defects in company policies. He spent the remainder of his life on his farm, "the Bouwerie" (from which New York City's "Bowery" takes its name).
